Gameplay
Runner3 is a rhythm platform game where players control CommanderVideo, who runs forward automatically. The player performs actions such as jumping, sliding, and kicking to overcome obstacles and collect items, with many objects synced to the background music. Optional collectibles include gold bars, which increase the player's score, and Mode-Ups, which progress the level's music and boost the score. The five modes—Hyper, Mega, Super, Ultra, and Extra—are the same as in previous Runner games, but the Mode-Up item now appears as a blue boombox instead of a red 3D plus. A new collectible, Gems, appears on alternate, more difficult paths that often require skipping gold bars, and each Gem can be collected once to unlock cosmetic items. New mechanics include rideable vehicles, the ability to double jump, and alternate paths that branch to the side, selected by inputting a direction. Hero Quests are side-quests where CommanderVideo interacts with non-playable characters, such as tasks to collect specific items, and completing them unlocks new playable characters, including Shovel Knight, Eddie Riggs from Brütal Legend, and the Narrator, a caricature of voice actor Charles Martinet.
Release
Runner3 was announced in September 2016. Nintendo revealed in February 2017 that the game would launch on the Nintendo Switch in the latter half of 2017, but Choice Provisions announced in August 2017 that it would be delayed to 2018. A physical version was announced by Nicalis on December 13, 2017, and the game released on Steam and Nintendo Switch on May 22, 2018.
