Plot
Set in December 1944, the story follows ten-year-old Fran, who witnesses the murder of her parents and is admitted to Oswald Asylum, separated from her cat Mr. Midnight. Under psychiatrist Dr. Marcel Deern, she takes pills that trigger hallucinations of a parallel universe filled with blood, torture, and a creature named Remor, whom she believes killed her parents. Escaping the asylum, Fran enters a forest with ghostly spirits, then a haunted house belonging to conjoined twins Clara and Mia Buhalmet, who kidnap her and Mr. Midnight to force a separation ritual. Fran tricks them and escapes, but crossing a root bridge causes her to transform into a tree in Ithersta, a harmonious land of vegetables and insects. There she meets Palontras, who helps her return home. Fran then encounters Itward, a giant skeletal creature who had aided her search for Mr. Midnight. Itward takes her in a flying machine, throwing a surprise birthday party, but evil spirits sabotage the craft, separating them. Fran awakens near home, is taken by Dr. Deern, and after visiting her parents' grave, Remor captures them. In a hell-like dimension ruled by Remor's mother Mabuka, it is revealed that Fran's aunt Grace and Dr. Oswald orchestrated Remor's possession of Fran to murder her parents, believing her suffering key to an experiment. After Oswald shoots Fran, Itward and Palontras rescue her, killing Grace and Oswald. Revived, Fran, Mr. Midnight, Itward, and Palontras fly away, with Fran resolving to be happy.
