Composition

The Korean title "손오공" refers to both the Monkey King Sun Wukong from Journey to the West and Son Goku from Dragon Ball. A line in the chorus, "Feels like I turned into Son Ogong", is performed with two fingers drawn to the forehead, referencing Goku's instant transmission. Musically, the track is an alternative jersey club song with kick rhythms, written in G♯ major at 137 beats per minute.

Reception

Hong Yoo of The Korea Herald praised the song's fierce energy in both music and choreography. IZM's Jeong Su-min found the first impression attractive but criticized it for reinforcing orientalism. Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic described it as pulsing with a booming beat, euphoric build-up, and popping drop. Rolling Stone ranked it number 47 on its list of the 100 best songs of 2023, calling it a victory-lap single. NME's Rhian Daly wrote that it arranges its elements into a cohesive whole and is a constantly transforming song. Grammy included it in their list of 15 K-pop Songs That Took 2023 By Storm, and Business Insider's Palmer Haasch ranked it second best among K-pop songs of 2023.
