Ditto (song)
A wintry, minimalist K-pop hit about platonic love.
NewJeans released "Ditto" on December 19, 2022, through ADOR, a label under Hybe Corporation. The song was produced by 250, who co-composed it with Ylva Dimberg. Dimberg also co-wrote the lyrics alongside The Black Skirts, Oohyo, and NewJeans member Minji. Musically, "Ditto" draws from Baltimore club, blending electronic and dance production with elements of house, breakbeat, and UK garage. Its lyrics reflect on a platonic love from the past.
The track achieved significant chart success, spending a record 13 weeks at number one on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart. It reached number eight on the Billboard Global 200, topped charts in Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and entered the top 10 in Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Critics praised its wintry, minimalist, and nostalgic sound, viewing it as a fresh departure from the maximalist style common in K-pop. Rolling Stone ranked it 19th on its 2023 list of the 100 Greatest Songs in the History of Korean Pop Music, making it the most recent entry.
The music video, filmed in Daegu, South Korea, shows the group members as high school students recording their daily lives with a camcorder. In 2023, "Ditto" won Song of the Year at the Asia Artist Awards, Korean Music Awards, MAMA Awards, and Melon Music Awards. Later that year, the Korea Music Content Association and the Recording Industry Association of Japan each certified the song platinum for surpassing 100 million streams in their respective countries.
