"Signal" (stylized in all caps) is a song by South Korean girl group Twice, released as the lead single from their fourth extended play of the same name on May 15, 2017, by JYP Entertainment. It was the group's first lead single produced by JYP Entertainment founder Park Jin-young. The song won Song of the Year and Best Dance Performance – Female Group at the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Background and release

JYP Entertainment announced Twice's comeback with their fourth EP Signal and its title track on May 1, 2017. The first music video teaser appeared online on May 13, and the song was released as a digital download on May 15. A Japanese version, with lyrics by Yu Shimoji and Samuelle Soung, was pre-released on June 14 as a promotional single for the compilation album #Twice.

Music video

Directed by Naive Creative Production, the music video features a science fiction-fantasy theme with a green-headed alien and the nine members displaying superpowers such as time reversing, invisibility, and telekinesis. It surpassed 100 million YouTube views on August 30, 2017, and ranked second on YouTube's Most Popular Music Video in Korea for that year, behind "Knock Knock". It also placed ninth on YouTube's Top Trend Music Video in Japan for 2017.

Accolades

"Signal" won twelve music program awards in South Korea, including triple crowns on Music Bank and Inkigayo. At the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards, it received Song of the Year and Best Dance Performance – Female Group, and was nominated for Best Music Video. It was also nominated for Artist of the Year – Digital Music (May) at the 7th Gaon Chart Music Awards, and earned two weekly Melon Popularity Awards.
