Right Now (NewJeans song)
NewJeans' Japanese debut B-side with a Takashi Murakami collaboration.
"Right Now" is a song by South Korean girl group NewJeans, released through ADOR on June 21, 2024. It appears as a B-side on the group's third single album, Supernatural (2024). Together with the title track "Supernatural," the song represents NewJeans' entry into the Japanese music market.
The group debuted in 2022 and achieved international success in 2023 with the single album OMG and the EP Get Up. That year, "Ditto" and "OMG" became their first entries on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Ditto" topping South Korea's Circle Digital Chart for a record thirteen weeks and sparking a breakbeat trend in K-pop. Get Up became their first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 and sold over two million copies, earning year-end praise from multiple publications.
Musically, "Right Now" is a drum and bass track with lyrics in Japanese, English, and Korean. The Korea Times described it as leaning toward the Sambass subgenre.
A teaser for the music video dropped on May 1, 2024, announcing a collaboration with Japanese visual artist Takashi Murakami, who created the video and designed artwork for the CD single. Murakami had previously called himself a "huge fan of NewJeans" in January 2023. A snippet of the song appeared on May 9, 2024, in a Lotte Wellfood advertisement for their Zero dessert brand featuring the group.
The music video, released on June 17, 2024, was directed by Lee Youngeum and produced by Min Hee-jin with Murakami. It follows animated versions of NewJeans, styled after The Powerpuff Girls and incorporating Murakami's Kaikai Kiki flower character—first seen in their 2023 video for "New Jeans." The story begins with Hanni inviting a crush to a movie night, but a flower emoji reply sends the group on a quest to decode its meaning. The second verse's line "Your chance is here and now" underscores the urgency of romantic moments. The video ends with a typing indicator. It garnered around 7 million views upon release.
Commercially, the track debuted at number 15 on Billboard's Hits of the World chart for South Korea and peaked at number 46 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart for the week of July 6, 2024.
Credits list NewJeans as vocalists, with writing by Gigi, Lolo Zouaï, and Satomoka. Zouaï also contributed composition and background vocals. Park Jinsu handled composition and production.
