Background and release

Following the January 2, 2024 premiere of the pre-release single "Oh Mymy: 7s" and its music video, TWS promoted their first EP through teasers, a highlight medley, a product endorsement deal with Lotte Chilsung's Milkis, and cover features in Japanese magazines Ray and ViVi. With the release of Sparkling Blue and "Plot Twist" on January 22, TWS became the first boy group to debut under Pledis Entertainment in nine years, since Seventeen in 2015. That same day, the group performed the song alongside three other tracks on the global debut program TWS: Debut Show, broadcast on Mnet, M2, and Hybe Labels channels on YouTube.

Critical reception

Jeff Benjamin ranked "Plot Twist" third on Billboard's mid-year list of 2024's 20 best K-Pop songs, calling it "a sonic adventure" with "unexpected but dynamic turns within the production." Paste's Kayti Burt praised its relatable lyrics and "shiny" production, calling it "an endearing official introduction" and "one of the industry's biggest hits of the year." Kyung Jimin of Osen described the song as giving "a pleasant feeling" and summarized it as a story of overcoming the vagueness of a first encounter with anticipation for bright days ahead.

Commercial performance

In South Korea, "Plot Twist" reached number two on the Circle Digital Chart during the week of March 3–9, 2024. The track maintained strong performance on domestic platforms like Melon, Bugs, and Spotify. Its easy-listening style sparked discussion about how boy groups often struggle to climb major Korean charts because their music tends toward heavier genres. While the song never hit number one on weekly or monthly rankings, it claimed the top spot on the Circle Digital Chart for the first half of 2024.
