The song was co-written by Black Eyed Pilseung, the duo of Rado and Choi Kyu-sung who had written several earlier Twice singles, together with Jeon Goon. Tamar Herman of Billboard characterized it as a bouncing electro-pop track with a retro-inspired sound and bolder styling, noting that the group's vocals adopt a more mature, sultry tone during verses while maintaining exuberant energy in the chorus.
Reception
"Fancy" debuted at number 3 on both the Gaon Digital Chart and K-pop Hot 100, and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart and the Billboard Japan Hot 100. It also reached number 8 on the Oricon Digital Singles chart and number 17 on the RMNZ Hot Singles. The song was certified platinum for streaming in South Korea in May 2021 after surpassing 100 million streams, and received multiple streaming certifications in Japan, including 2× Platinum in April 2026. It ranked at number 5 on Dazed's 20 Best K-pop Songs of 2019 and was included on Billboard's best K-pop songs of the 2010s list.
Music video and promotion
The music video, directed by Kim Young-jo and Yoo Seung-woo of Naive, was uploaded on April 22, 2019. It placed third on YouTube's Most Popular Music Video in South Korea for 2019 and tenth on YouTube's Top Trend Music Video in Japan for the same year. The video features vivid CGI backdrops and the members in stylish black and colorful outfits, with choreography by Bock Mi-ran, Kang Da-sol, Kiel Tutin, and Leejung Lee. Twice promoted the song on music programs including M Countdown, Music Bank, Show! Music Core, Inkigayo, and Show Champion between April 25 and May 1, 2019.
