Writing and composition
The track blends heavy drumbeats and metal guitar riffs with a heavy bass line and fully amplified chorus sound. G-Dragon mixes rap with singing, and the lyrics depict a man full of angst and despair who demands to be left alone, spending the night like a "crooked-minded person" rejecting sugarcoated sympathy. G-Dragon intended the song to make audiences go crazy during live shows, so the raps and chorus were made extra catchy for easy singing and dancing.
Commercial performance
With only three days of release, "Crooked" debuted at number seven on Gaon's Digital and Download charts, selling 160,893 digital downloads. In its second week, it rose to number three on the Digital chart and number two on the Download chart, selling 162,815 copies. By the end of 2013, the song accumulated 1,106,269 downloads and 29.6 million streams. It debuted at number two on Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 and peaked at number five on World Digital Songs. The single won four music program awards, and G-Dragon became the first act to win multiple music shows with four different songs from one album.
Music video
The video for "Crooked" dropped on September 4, 2013, and was shot in England on a budget three to four times bigger than the label's norm. G-Dragon cycles through 16 outfits, including tees paying homage to punk acts Black Flag and Sex Pistols. He dashes through the London Underground and wreaks havoc in clubs. Spin called it a fast-paced clip that plays with early punk imagery. In January 2017, it became his first solo video to hit 100 million YouTube views.
Live performances
G-Dragon first performed the song on the final shows of his One of a Kind World Tour in Seoul on August 31 and September 1. The first televised performance was on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook on September 6, and the first music show performance was on SBS's Inkigayo on September 8, 2013. On M Countdown, YG trainees iKon and Winner acted as backup dancers. The song was performed at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards, where BigBang's "Sober" was used as a prelude two years before its release. G-Dragon also performed it on his second world tour, Act III: M.O.T.T.E.
