Music and lyrics
Musically, "Blueming" is in the key of C major at 106 beats per minute and runs 3:37. The vivacious pop-rock number continues IU's color-oriented lyrics from her earlier albums Chat-Shire (2015) and Palette (2017). Lyrically, it explores everyday anxieties of modern-day romance in an increasingly online and technological world, describing how she has "come into bloom" with an unattainable relationship and her personal life. Tamar Herman of Billboard noted the song's calm, upbeat portrayal of sending flower-like texts to a love interest, calling it a representation of living and loving at the end of a decade shaped by social media and technology.

The song debuted at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart, giving IU her 15th number-one single and 22nd number-one song overall in South Korea, extending her record for the most number-one songs by any South Korean artist. It also reached number one on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100, her eleventh number-one single on that chart. Over a year later, it ranked number five on the year-end Gaon Digital Chart for 2020. In the United States, it peaked at number 10 on the US World Digital Song Sales chart in the week of November 29, 2019.
