Attention (NewJeans song)

"Attention" marks the debut single of South Korean girl group NewJeans. Its music video arrived as a surprise on July 22, 2022, and the song itself became available for download and streaming the following month as part of the group's self-titled debut EP. The track was written and composed by 250, Duckbay, Gigi, and member Danielle. Musically, it blends pop and R&B with influences from late-1990s and early-2000s sounds, including house music layered over a new jack swing beat, and features dynamic shifts between major and minor chords. Lyrically, it explores the feelings of young infatuation.

Critics widely praised the song's catchy production. It appeared on year-end lists of the best songs of 2022 from outlets such as Billboard, IZM, Music Y, NME, and Teen Vogue. Commercially, "Attention" reached number one on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart, peaked at number 54 on the Billboard Global 200, and charted in Argentina, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. It also earned certifications in Japan and South Korea.

The music video was released without prior announcement, and no member identities or group concept had been revealed beforehand. A choreography video followed the same day, along with the announcement of the group's debut EP, which would contain four tracks including two additional singles.

Running 2 minutes and 58 seconds, "Attention" alternates between major and minor chords. Its minimal instrumentation draws on late-1990s and early-2000s pop and R&B, with beats reminiscent of new jack swing and house music. The production includes vocal samples, applause sounds, and chimes in the hook. All five members harmonize during the refrain. Danielle contributed to the lyrics.

Critic Jang Jun-hwan of IZM noted the track "aims for a comfortable listening experience, but will never be boring" and "satisfies the concept and significance of debut in many ways." Carmen Chin of NME described the beat as "bustling" and possessing a "groovy je ne sais quoi."

On the charts, "Attention" debuted at number one on Billboard's South Korea Songs chart and number two on the Circle Digital Chart, later climbing to number one on the Circle Digital Chart for the week of August 14–20. Internationally, it entered New Zealand's RMNZ Hot Singles chart at number 26, peaked at number 54 on the Global 200, and debuted at number 11 in both Singapore and Vietnam.
