Background

New Orleans scored first when Tommy Kramer's fumble on a bad snap led to Bobby Hebert's 10-yard touchdown pass to Eric Martin. A muffed punt by Mel Gray set up Chuck Nelson's 42-yard field goal, and Anthony Carter returned a Saints punt 84 yards for a touchdown, a playoff record. In the second quarter Wade Wilson threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Steve Jordan, Allen Rice threw a 10-yard halfback-option touchdown to Carter, and after Morten Andersen's 40-yard field goal made it 24–10, John Harris' interception set up Wilson's 44-yard Hail Mary touchdown to Hassan Jones on an untimed play at the end of the half, the Saints having been penalized for having 12 men on the field.
