Napoli have played at the stadium since 1959. It had been named Stadio San Paolo, after Paul the Apostle, who arrived in the area by sea some 2,000 years ago, and it kept that name for 61 years.

After Maradona's death, the then mayor Luigi de Magistris and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis proposed renaming the stadium; the proposal was passed on 4 December 2020.
