Plot

Twilight Sparkle, on Princess Celestia's advice, heads to the abandoned Castle of the Two Sisters to study the mysterious chest from the Tree of Harmony. She finds a library that is still intact and settles in there with Spike for a night of reading. At the same time, Rainbow Dash and Applejack challenge each other to prove who is braver by spending the night in the supposedly haunted ruins. Separately, Rarity talks Fluttershy into joining her to collect old tapestries from the castle for restoration, while Pinkie Pie skips her bell-ringing duties at the school to pick flowers in the Everfree Forest.

As the ponies explore different parts of the crumbling castle, its ancient mechanisms start to separate them. Fluttershy accidentally sets off a rotating wall that traps her and Rarity in a hidden room for a while, which makes Fluttershy's pet bunny Angel panic and dash deeper into the castle. Rainbow Dash and Applejack see moving tapestries and hooves that seem to come out of the walls, and they become sure they are seeing supernatural events linked to Granny Smith's tales about the "Pony of Shadows" that supposedly haunts the ruins after dark.

When night falls, mysterious organ music echoes through the hallways, setting off various trap doors and scattering the frightened ponies even more. Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack all bump into each other in the dark without knowing who they are, and they think they are running into ghosts or monsters. This makes them completely hysterical and panicked. Twilight hears the noise and uses her magic to freeze everyone in place. She then brings the group together and calms them down when they realize they have been scaring each other all night.

The ponies follow the organ music to its source and find that the cloaked figure playing it is actually Pinkie Pie. She had followed them into the castle because she thought they were having a group party. Back in the library, Twilight explains that reading "The Journal of the Two Sisters" helped her understand the castle's history and made the experience less scary. She suggests they keep their own friendship journal to help each other learn and handle future challenges. The others agree. But then, Pinkie Pie's discarded cloak is picked up by something else lurking in the dark. Its glowing yellow eyes appear and stare menacingly at the viewer, ending the episode.

Reception

Sherilyn Connelly, who wrote Ponyville Confidential, awarded the episode a B+. Daniel Alvarez from Unleash The Fanboy gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars, calling it "definitely fun" but predicting it "won't be making classic status anytime soon." He compared the Pony of Shadows twist to a Scooby-Doo episode, praised the clever setup of ponies exploring the castle unaware of each other, and complimented the writing for Rarity and Twilight. Despite noting "a lot of running and yelling," he felt the episode had strong writing and introduced an interesting shift in the status quo. Brian Truitt of USA Today described it as "chilling" in a "kid-friendly way."

In a deeper analysis, author Jen A. Blue found "Castle Mane-ia" to be "more interesting than entertaining," highlighting its complex structure of three interwoven stories that physically interact rather than just sharing a common origin like earlier multi-story episodes. She placed it within the fourth season's unified arc, noting it picks up right after "Princess Twilight Sparkle" with the mystery box and introduces the Journal of the Two Sisters as a replacement for letters to Celestia. Blue saw the title as a dual pun on "mania" and the Castlevania game series, argued the castle's look evokes Hammer Horror, and suggested the shadowy cloaked figure foreshadows Tirek's later appearance. She wrote that season four felt closer to creator Lauren Faust's original vision, calling it "the idealized form of the series intended by its creator, but assembled by others."

Critic Callie Petch gave the episode an A, calling it "a freakin' clinic in comedy, being utterly hysterical from start to finish." She praised first-time series writer Josh Haber for a script that felt like it came from a longtime show veteran, described it as "one of the best episodes in the show's entire run," and commended the voice work, especially Ashleigh Ball's performance, along with storyboarding by Emmett Hall and Tony Cliff. Megan Crouse of Den of Geek used the episode to argue that Friendship Is Magic is high fantasy, pointing to the ruins of the sisters' old castle, which evokes a medieval setting and a sense of loss similar to Théoden's in The Lord of the Rings.
