Plot

In their new castle, Twilight Sparkle and her friends accidentally trigger a holographic map of Equestria while sitting on their thrones. Floating images of their cutie marks point to a distant location. They follow the map and discover a village where every pony has the same cutie mark: a black equals sign. The visitors grow suspicious of the villagers' forced smiles and overly friendly behavior, though Fluttershy is taken by their politeness. They meet Starlight Glimmer, the village leader, who says everyone gave up their cutie marks because she believes different talents and opinions cause conflict among friends. She urges them to stay and experience village life. Later, the six argue about why they came, catching the attention of Sugar Belle, a baker who misses her talent. She and two other villagers, Party Favor and Night Glider, show curiosity about the six's cutie marks and friendship. Wanting their own marks back, the villagers tell the six about a cavern vault where the marks are kept, along with a magical staff called the Staff of Sameness. Starlight takes them to the vault, where the other villagers surround them, and she uses the staff to forcibly remove their cutie marks. Now markless, the six are locked in a prison chamber to be resocialized. They decide to escape by convincing Starlight they have accepted her ways, so Fluttershy pretends to conform and is welcomed into the community. Starlight punishes Party Favor by imprisoning him with the others after he claims he acted alone, protecting Sugar Belle and Night Glider. Spying later, Fluttershy sees Starlight send Double Diamond to collect the six's cutie marks, with bigger plans for Twilight's mark. She then watches Starlight accidentally splash water on herself, washing off her own equals sign to reveal her real, unremoved cutie mark.

Themes

The main theme is that mediocrity is harmful. She deemed the message political and highlighted faith, inclusion, celebrating differences, and the effect one could have as prominent themes. Brandon Morse of The Federalist echoed her opinion of the overt messaging.

Production and promotion

Starlight Glimmer was conceived by Meghan McCarthy and M.A. Larson, with Kora Kosicka finalizing her appearance. Co-director Jim Miller saw her as a "proto-Twilight character," hence her color scheme mirrors Twilight Sparkle's. Art director Rebecca Dart designed the Cutie Map. The Staff of Sameness was a collaborative design by directors Jayson Thiessen and Jim Miller, Dart, and prop designer Charmaine Verhagen; Miller refuted any link to the Spear of Longinus from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The sole song, "In Our Town," features Kelly Sheridan's vocals in the first part. Songwriter Daniel Ingram drew from World War II propaganda music, striving to make it both motivating and "creepy as heck." Caleb Chan handled the orchestration. A trailer premiered via Yahoo! TV Videos in February 2015, followed by a Hasbro teaser on February 14. The full two-part season five premiere screened without commercials at the 2015 BABSCon.

Broadcast and reception

The two parts of "The Cutie Map" were shown together as a single hour-long program on Discovery Family on April 4, 2015. The first part drew 509,000 viewers, while the second had 574,000. Nielsen ratings indicated that about 0.3 percent of American households watched both segments. This premiere achieved the series' highest ratings among children aged 2 to 11, those aged 6 to 11, and girls aged 6 to 11. During its time slot, Discovery Family ranked second among all broadcast and cable networks for girls aged 6 to 11. Daniel Alvarez of Unleash the Fanboy rated the premiere nine out of ten, commending the overall writing, the moral, and Princess Twilight, and describing Starlight Glimmer as a "great antagonist," though he felt Pinkie Pie contributed little beyond noticing a fake smile. Abbott praised the themes of individuality, self-improvement, and personal impact. In 2016, the episodes received a joint Hugo Award nomination for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form). Den of Geek reported that some critics attributed this to the Rabid Puppies ballot-manipulation campaign, but stressed the nomination was deserved, even if the Puppies' goal may have been a joke meant to cause embarrassment.
