Plot
The great dragon migration is a spectacular event that the Mane Six and Spike gather to watch. Spike is excited, but his mood sours when Rainbow Dash calls him a "lame dragon." The other ponies try to defend him, but their kind comments only make him feel more embarrassed about being small and gentle. That night, Spike cannot sleep, troubled by questions about where he came from and who he is. He realizes he knows nothing about dragon culture or where he truly belongs, having lived his whole life with ponies.
The next morning, Spike decides to join the migration and learn how to be a real dragon. Twilight supports his choice, but secretly follows him with Rainbow Dash and Rarity, who disguise themselves as one large dragon to avoid being seen. Spike catches up with a group of teenage dragons in a volcanic area. Their leader, Garble, immediately mocks Spike for being small and wingless, questioning if he is even a real dragon. The teenagers put Spike through initiation challenges, including rough wrestling matches and dangerous lava pool contests. He does poorly in most events, but accidentally impresses them with his pain tolerance after a painful belly flop into molten rock. They accept him as a rookie and celebrate with a loud party where Spike eats a lot of gems.
Garble invites Spike to join a raid on a phoenix nest to steal eggs. Spike is reluctant but goes along, tasked with distracting the parent birds while the others loot the nest. He follows through, but finds one unhatched egg. The other dragons demand he smash it to prove his loyalty. When Spike refuses, Garble becomes violent. Twilight, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash drop their disguise and help Spike escape to safety.
Back in Ponyville, Spike thinks about his experience and writes to Princess Celestia. He learns the difference between what he is biologically and who he chooses to be as an individual. The phoenix egg he rescued hatches into a baby bird, which he names Peewee.
Reception
Sherilyn Connelly, who wrote Ponyville Confidential, rated the episode a B. In her SF Weekly review, she noted that Spike refused to destroy the phoenix egg because of his own background: he had also been an abandoned egg before Twilight Sparkle and her family took him in. Jen A. Blue, in a critical analysis, argued that while "The Mysterious Mare Do Well" accidentally showed problems with gender socialization, "Dragon Quest" seems to tackle those issues on purpose. Blue saw the dragons as the male counterpart to Equestria’s female-led society and considered a transgender interpretation of Spike’s story. She pointed out that Spike has traits typically seen as feminine but defines himself by his own identity rather than physical expectations. Blue described the dragons’ King of the Hoard game as one of the most accurate depictions of hegemonic masculinity she had ever encountered. She viewed it as a display of power-based masculinity where dragons fight over treasure that nobody ends up claiming. Blue made a distinction between power and freedom: destroying phoenix eggs is the ultimate act of power because it removes all choices, while creating something is the ultimate act of freedom. She concluded that Spike rejects the dragons’ power-focused culture and, more than any other character, even the Cutie Mark Crusaders, is a brony.
