Reception
Sherilyn Connelly, who wrote Ponyville Confidential, rated the episode an A+. In her SF Weekly review, she highlighted the lesson that being ladylike does not mean being weak. Jen A. Blue offered a completely opposite view, calling it the worst script Amy Keating Rogers had produced for the series. Blue claimed the episode was not funny, lacked emotional weight, and added nothing new to the characters except for what she saw as problematic attitudes toward women in Spike's actions. She labeled the story unoriginal and clichéd, linking it to O. Henry's "The Ransom of Red Chief" and ultimately to the misogynistic roots of Child Ballad 278, "The Farmer's Curst Wife." Blue attacked the "ladylike" moral as inherently restrictive and contrary to the show's usual challenge of gender norms. She also condemned Spike's daydream of rescuing Rarity for a kiss as "Nice Guy Syndrome" and a transactional view of romance that ignored Rarity's independence. Blue concluded the episode promoted toxic gender roles and failed to question cultural ideas about femininity and relationships.
