Plot

The narrative begins with twelve-year-old Tyler Dupree living on the estate of wealthy aerospace figure E. D. Lawton and his wife Carol, who struggles with alcoholism. Tyler and his mother reside in a guest house there. Tyler befriends the Lawtons' thirteen-year-old twins: Jason, an exceptionally bright child being prepared to inherit the family enterprise, and Diane, with whom Tyler falls in love. One evening, the three youngsters see every star vanish at once.

All satellites drop from orbit, disrupting global communications. A dark, opaque barrier called a "spin membrane" has enveloped Earth. Inside this membrane, time moves extremely slowly relative to the outside: roughly 3.17 years pass beyond it for each second within, equating to about 100 million years for every Earth year. A fake star projected on the membrane's inner surface lets life proceed almost normally.

However, the accelerated external timeline means the Sun will expand and render Earth's region uninhabitable within a few decades of subjective time. Jason, now a trained scientist, grows fixated on the membrane. He goes to work for Perihelion, an aerospace research company owned by his father but tightly connected to the government. Diane becomes involved with the "New Kingdom," a Christian sect promoting hedonism and indulgence, where she meets and eventually marries Simon Townsend.

Tyler studies medicine and becomes a doctor, later hired by Jason as a staff physician. Perihelion undertakes the terraforming of Mars, a process requiring millions of years in real time but completed in mere months on Earth. Once finished, Perihelion and allied international organizations launch crewed colonization missions. Two years after terraforming starts, satellite images reveal agriculture and advanced human societies on Mars.

Then, Mars itself is suddenly enclosed in its own spin membrane. This occurs just as the Martian ambassador, Wun Ngo Wen, travels to Earth bearing advanced nanotechnology. Wun cures Jason's multiple sclerosis, transforming him into what Martians call a "fourth stage" life form, granting him an extended potential lifespan. Perihelion subsequently disperses other Martian nanotechnology across the outer Solar System, aiming to gradually reach other star systems and locate other worlds similarly trapped in time.
