Fates Forever
First MOBA designed exclusively for tablets.
Fates Forever was a tablet-exclusive multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, promoted by its developer as the first of its kind for that platform. Created by Hammer & Chisel Inc.—the studio that later became Discord—it launched for iPad on July 3, 2014, with 3-versus-3 matches drawing inspiration from established MOBAs such as *League of Legends* and *Defense of the Ancients*.
At its initial release, the game offered ten playable characters, each with unique special abilities tailored to different play styles, and at least four more were planned for post-launch. By early 2015, the roster had grown to fourteen characters. The game is no longer accessible; both the app and its supporting community website were shut down in October 2015.
Hammer & Chisel, founded by former OpenFeint CEO Jason Citron, aimed to create "great, complex games that don't compromise simply because they're for mobile device." The development team behind Fates Forever later built Discord, a voice-over-IP platform for online communities. The game received a Metacritic score of 82 out of 100, based on eight critic reviews.

Lore & Background
Fates Forever was the first game developed and published by start-up game studio Hammer & Chisel, a company founded by former OpenFeint CEO Jason Citron. The studio's intent was to build 'great, complex games that don't compromise simply because they're for mobile device.' The game launched with ten playable characters, each with several special abilities unique to their play-style, and at least four more were planned for post-release. By early 2015, the roster had grown to 14 characters.
The game's development staff would later go on to develop Discord, an online VoIP platform designed as a hub for people to chat in. Fates Forever is no longer available for download or gameplay; the app and supporting community webpage were disabled in October 2015.
Reader's Guide
Fates Forever holds significance as an early attempt to bring the MOBA genre to mobile devices, specifically tablets, at a time when the genre was dominated by PC titles like League of Legends and Defense of the Ancients. Its developer, Hammer & Chisel, later became Discord, a platform that would reshape online communication for gamers. The game's short lifespan—from its July 2014 release to its shutdown in October 2015—illustrates the challenges of sustaining a mobile MOBA in a competitive market. Despite its limited availability, Fates Forever received a Metacritic score of 82/100 based on 8 critic reviews, indicating generally favorable reception. Its legacy is tied to the eventual success of its developer's next project, Discord, rather than the game itself. The title is remembered as a niche experiment in mobile gaming that preceded the rise of more successful mobile MOBAs.
