Eternal Return is set on Lumia Island, a secluded location with 16 distinct areas. A scientific organization called AGLAIA conducts experiments on human test subjects to evolve an elite species, wiping their memories after each experiment. Players choose from multiple characters with unique skills and abilities, collecting materials from containers, slain animals, or other players to craft weapons and equipment.

Eternal Return's significance lies in its hybrid gameplay, merging battle royale mechanics with MOBA-style character abilities and crafting. The map uses restricted areas instead of a traditional closing circle, and players must scavenge and craft to survive.
