End of Nations
Unreleased MOBA set in a dystopian future.
End of Nations was a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game for Windows that never saw release. Developed by Petroglyph Games and published by Trion Worlds, it blended sci-fi visual style and atmosphere with the MOBA format. The project is believed to have been cancelled.
First announced in 2011 as a massively multiplayer online real-time strategy (MMORTS) game, it was later reworked into a MOBA.
The story begins with Pierre Frenay, a French Resistance member from World War II who believed the United Nations and world governments were ineffective at preventing war and suffering. He created a secret organization within the UN itself, aiming to destabilize governments through terrorism, assassinations, and engineered disasters. The goal was to discredit and dismantle all nations, eventually bringing everyone under a single rule.
Fifty years later, a global economic collapse triggers shortages and conflicts, leading to the failure of nearly all governments. As chaos spreads, the United Nations steps in with aid and military force, initially welcomed by the public. Renamed the Order of Nations (ON), it becomes the world’s sole government. The populace is horrified when the ON begins abducting people at night and executing citizens for asking questions. Resistance groups form in response.
By the time the game begins, the resistance is well underway. The Liberation Front, led by American war hero General Alec Chase, and the Shadow Revolution, led by former ON assassin Monkh Erdene, are part of the Coalition, an alliance against the Order. The player commands Coalition forces attacking the Typhoon Cannon, a massive artillery turret at the ON base called Widow’s Wall. The ON leader, General Sevastian Korvus, is inside the cannon. The assault succeeds: the cannon is destroyed and Korvus is killed. However, the allies immediately quarrel. The cannon’s collapse leaves a giant breach in Widow’s Wall. Chase wants to push deeper into the base, but Erdene argues that their coalition has already captured the Siege Cortex and that further advance was not part of the mission. ON land battleships, known as Assault Panzers, approach from both sides of the breach. Chase asks Erdene to engage them so he can attack the inner base. Erdene apologizes, says it was not part of the mission, and withdraws his forces.

Lore & Background
The game's plot is set 50 years into a future where a worldwide economic crisis and collapse led to the failure of almost all governments. The United Nations, renamed the Order of Nations (ON), became the sole world government but began oppressing its citizens, leading to resistance movements. The Liberation Front, led by American war hero General Alec Chase, and the Shadow Revolution, led by former Order of Nations assassin Monkh Erdene, form the Coalition against the Order of Nations. The game begins with an assault on the Typhoon Cannon at Widow's Wall, which succeeds in destroying the cannon and killing Order leader General Sevastian Korvus, but the allies then bicker and separate, continuing to fight both the Order and each other.
Reader's Guide
End of Nations is notable as a game that underwent a significant genre shift during development, from a massively multiplayer online real-time strategy (MMORTS) game initially revealed in 2010 to a MOBA by July 2013. It featured three factions: two playable—the Liberation Front and the Shadow Revolution—and one unplayable computer-controlled antagonist, the Order of Nations. The game entered alpha testing in June 2011, was announced as free-to-play with a subscriber option in August 2011, and re-entered alpha testing as a reworked MOBA in August 2013. However, following a restructuring at Trion Worlds in November 2013, development appeared to enter limbo, with no new information or patches provided to alpha testers after August 2013. By March 2, 2014, all mentions of End of Nations were removed from Trion's website, leading to its presumed cancellation. Its legacy lies in its ambitious but ultimately unrealized vision and its reflection of the volatile nature of game development.
