Background
EMI Films pulled its funding days before shooting was due to start; George Harrison and his business partner Denis O'Brien then financed the film by forming HandMade Films. Its religious satire drew accusations of blasphemy and protests from some religious groups. In the UK it was rated AA (14), but 11 local councils banned it outright and 28 more raised its rating to X.
