The French

The castle garrison that taunts King Arthur in Holy Grail.

The French soldiers in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) hold a castle that King Arthur and his knights reach on their quest. They say they already have the Grail, taunt the Britons, and drive them off by hurling farm animals at them.

Background

They come back at the end of the film, when Arthur's company finds Castle Arrrghhh occupied by the same French soldiers. In the stage musical Spamalot the soldiers again taunt the knights, and Bedevere's answer is a large wooden rabbit in the manner of the Trojan horse, which the French take in before the knights remember to hide inside it. More widely, Cleese and Palin often played stereotyped Frenchmen in Monty Python's Flying Circus, with berets, striped shirts and garbled French.
