The Knights Who Say Ni

The forest knights who demand a shrubbery in Holy Grail.

The Knights Who Say "Ni!", also called the Knights of Ni, are a band of knights King Arthur and his followers meet in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), and again in the stage musical Spamalot. They frighten the party by shouting "Ni!" and will not let anyone through their forest unless given a shrubbery.

Background

They stand silhouetted in a misty wood in robes and horned helmets, at least six of them. Only their leader, played by Michael Palin, speaks: a knight nearly twice Arthur's height in a great helm with long antlers, who calls them keepers of the sacred words "Ni", "Peng" and "Neee-Wom". He asks for a shrubbery that "looks nice. And not too expensive." To get one, Arthur and Bedivere go to a village, where they end up saying "Ni!" to an old woman before Roger the Shrubber interrupts them.
