Johansson began acting as a child, gaining critical acclaim for her role in The Horse Whisperer at age 13.[1] Her professions include acting, singing, producing, and directing, and she holds American nationality.[2]

Key facts and history

She enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and studied at Manhattan’s Professional Children’s School.[3][1] Johansson received her first two Academy Award nominations for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in 2019.[4] When she was seven years old, a talent agent chose to represent one of her brothers rather than her, which upset her greatly; nevertheless, she subsequently resolved to pursue acting.[3][5] Performing as a cynical outsider in Terry Zwigoff's 2001 black comedy Ghost World marked her major career advancement.[6]

She was cast as Black Widow in Jon Favreau's 2010 film Iron Man 2, which belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[7] Her first experience as a director was with the drama Eleanor the Great, which had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025.[8]

What the cited sources add

A Biography.com profile states that Johansson's mother adopted her sister Fenan, giving Scarlett a younger sibling.[1] The same source notes that Johansson stands at 5 feet, 3 inches.[1] A Vanity Fair article reports that filmmaker Jonathan Glazer took nine years to make Under the Skin, a sci-fi drama starring Johansson as an alien seductress.[9] The Vanity Fair piece also notes that The Independent called the film a "laughably bad alien hitchhiker movie"[9]

Bhattacharya's article "Scarlett in Bloom" quotes Robert Redford saying Johansson was "13 going on 30"[5] The same article states that Johansson started her career at 8 in a stage play alongside Ethan Hawke.[5]
