On August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, Charles Robert Redford Jr. was born to Martha Woodruff Redford (née Hart) and Charles Robert Redford Sr., who worked as an accountant.[1] Don Drysdale, who later became a professional baseball pitcher, was a classmate of Redford's at Van Nuys High School.[2]
Key facts and history
Elisha Redford, a Protestant Englishman who was Redford's patrilineal great-great-grandfather, wed Mary Ann McCreery, who was of Irish Catholic descent, in Manchester, Lancashire; the couple then relocated to New York City in 1849.[1][3] Redford's first film appearance was an uncredited role in the 1960 movie version of "Tall Story."[4] For his work in "The Voice of Charlie Pont" (1962), Redford received an Emmy nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category.[5] At the 74th Academy Awards in 2002, Redford was presented with an Academy Honorary Award.[6]
What the cited sources add
A Yahoo obituary describes Redford as "spectacularly good-looking and immensely popular," appearing in the tradition of matinée idols such as Gregory Peck and Cornel Wilde.[7] The Guardian reports that Redford confirmed his retirement from acting with the completion of The Old Man & the Gun, saying "I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting"[8] The same source states that Redford purchased a ski resort with fees from Downhill Racer and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.[7] According to the same source, Redford delivered "the performance of the latter half of his career" in the 2013 film "All Is Lost."[7][9]
A Deseret News article notes that Redford's path to movie stardom was quick: his first TV appearance was in 1960, he achieved major success with "Barefoot in the Park" seven years later, and then reached superstardom with "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" two years after that.[10]
