Seagal became the first non-Japanese and American to operate an aikido dojo in Japan.[1] Steven Seagal was born on April 10, 1952, in Lansing, Michigan, to Patricia Anne Fisher and Samuel Seagal.[2]
Key facts and history
Seagal married Miyako Fujitani in December 1974 after meeting her in California and following her to Japan.[3] He earned his aikido black belt in 1978 while teaching at the school owned by Miyako's family.[4] Seagal achieved mainstream success in 1992 with Under Siege, which critics described as "Die Hard on a battleship"[5] He directed and starred in On Deadly Ground in 1994, which was poorly received by critics.[6]
At age five, Seagal relocated with his family to Fullerton, California; his mother later recounted to People magazine that before this move he was weak and had asthma.[7][8] Between 1970 and 1971, Seagal was a student at Buena Park High School and Fullerton College.[9] In 1983, Seagal came back to the United States accompanied by senior student Haruo Matsuoka, and together they established an aikido dojo in North Hollywood.[10] Seagal's first film role was in 1988's Above the Law, a movie considered the first American film to incorporate aikido into its fight scenes.[11]
Seagal was granted Serbian citizenship on January 11, 2016, and Russian citizenship on November 3, 2016.[12][13]
What the cited sources add
Copeland arranged for Seagal's band Thunderbox to open for Sammy Hagar on June 4, 2006, at the Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix.[14] Hagar described the experience as "so weird" and noted that Seagal wore "full-blown pancake makeup" and was "dressed like he was ready to do a movie"[14] Copeland stated that Seagal "walks off stage, takes the two pistols and puts them back in his pockets" after the performance.[14]
