As a child, Arquette lived on a commune in rural Bentonville, Virginia, and later moved to Chicago at age seven.[1] Her first starring roles in 1987 included the television film Daddy, Pretty Smart, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.[2] Arquette played Olivia Evans in Boyhood, a project shot over 12 years beginning in 2002.[3] After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, she co-founded the non-profit GiveLove to support ecological sanitation and housing construction.[4]
Arquette has stated that as her family's time on the commune lengthened, their financial situation worsened, and she believes this hardship increased her capacity for empathy.[1] During her teenage years, Arquette attended a Catholic school and expressed a desire to become a nun.[5] After discovering her father's infidelity at age 14, Arquette left home and moved in with her sister Rosanna in Los Angeles.[5]
What the cited sources add
A Salon article notes that Boyhood included only 39 days of shooting across more than 4,000 days.[6] The same article describes Arquette's performance as "wonderful, fearless" and notes she played the same role as she aged from her early 30s to late 40s.[6] The Salon piece also states that Boyhood is covertly a story of parenthood about the maturation of the two adults.[6] A 1997 review in the Dallas Observer identifies Arquette's character in Lost Highway as Renee, a wife with red hair.[7]
