Last updated

He is an American actor best known for portraying Tyrion Lannister on HBO's Game of Thrones from 2011 to 2019.[1][2] Peter Dinklage was born on June 11, 1969, in the North Jersey region of New Jersey; his father John Carl Dinklage worked as an insurance salesman and his mother Diane Dinklage taught elementary school music.[3]

Key facts and history

He grew up in Mendham Township, New Jersey, and attended Delbarton School, a Catholic preparatory school.[3][4] In 1984, a production of Sam Shepard's play True West inspired him to pursue acting.[4] Dinklage studied for a drama degree at Bennington College, graduating in 1991.[5] His breakthrough came in 2003 playing Finbar McBride in Tom McCarthy's film The Station Agent.[6]

He married theater director Erica Schmidt in 2005, and they have two children.[7] Dinklage became a vegetarian at age 16, though he later added fish and chicken to his diet while filming Game of Thrones.[8] The 1995 independent comedy-drama Living in Oblivion marked Dinklage's first on-screen credit; in it he performed as a dwarf actor who is frustrated.[6][9] Dinklage became the initial actor chosen for Game of Thrones in May 2009; the show's creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss stated he was their preferred pick to play the character.[10]

What the cited sources add

Dinklage defended Gary Oldman's role in Tiptoes, stating, "It's Gary Oldman. He can do whatever he wants, and I'm so happy to be here"[11][12] The same review highlighted a sketch called "Space Pants" where Dinklage, in a blonde wig, performed a new wave anthem with "solid robot dance moves"[13]
