Lore & Background

Paul Wilson (baseball) (born 1973), pitcher in Major League Baseball

In Their Own Story

The July heat at Sun Devil Stadium pressed down like a wet towel. The Marlins were up by one in the sixth, and the starter had just been pulled with a sore shoulder. Wilson stepped to the mound, rolled his shoulder back, and stared at the catcher's sign. Three batters. Three outs. No fireworks, no highlight — just the sound of the ball hitting the glove, the dirt kicking up under his back foot, and the muffled roar of a few hundred fans who'd been here since the first pitch. He'd be on the next train out of town by Friday. But for those three outs, under the orange Florida sun, he was a Marlin.
