Reader's Guide
Mexico's best World Cup finishes are quarter-final appearances in 1970 and 1986, both as hosts. The 1994 quarter-final run was not their best, as they had already reached that stage twice before. In 1970, Mexico was in Group 1 with the Soviet Union, Belgium, and El Salvador; West Germany was not in that group. In 1986, Mexico topped Group B and defeated Bulgaria in the round of 16 before losing to West Germany in the quarter-finals.
