The United States of America (USA), also known as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It is a federal republic consisting of 50 states and a federal capital district, Washington, D.C. The 48 contiguous states border Canada to the north and Mexico to the south, with the semi-exclave of Alaska in the northwest and the archipelago of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The United States also asserts sovereignty over five major island territories and various uninhabited islands in Oceania and the Caribbean. It is a megadiverse country, with the world's fourth-largest land area and third-largest population, exceeding 341 million.

In Their Own Story
After a long absence from the global stage due to World War II and limited CONCACAF qualification spots, the U.S. struggled through the mid-20th century. They fielded 'Team America' in the NASL in 1983 but finished last before the league folded by 1984. A pivotal moment occurred during 1986 World Cup qualifying when Costa Rica defeated the U.S. 1–0 in Torrance, California, preventing qualification. However, on July 4, 1988, FIFA named the U.S. host of the 1994 World Cup despite criticism over the team's weakness and lack of a professional league. In 1990, Mexico was disqualified for using ineligible players, allowing the U.S. to qualify for their first World Cup in 40 years via a 1–0 win against Trinidad and Tobago. Under coach Bora Milutinović, the host nation tied Switzerland 1–1 in the Pontiac Silverdome—the first indoor World Cup game—and defeated Colombia 2–1 thanks to an own goal by Andrés Escobar.
