Background
The 2004 men's doubles tournament marked the twelfth time the event had been contested, appearing in every Olympics that featured tennis between 1896 and 1924, and again from 1988 onward, with a 1968 demonstration. The Woodies partnership ended after Mark Woodforde retired following the 2000 Games; that duo had won gold in 1996 and silver in 2000. Todd Woodbridge competed in his fourth Olympics, now seeded second alongside Wayne Arthurs.
The top seed was the American Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike. Canada's Daniel Nestor, the 2000 gold medalist, returned with a new partner, Frédéric Niemeyer. Poland debuted in the event, while France made its ninth appearance, tying Great Britain for the most among all nations.
