Tennis at the 1900 Summer Olympics – Men's doubles

Second appearance of men's doubles tennis at the Olympics.

Last updated

The men's doubles tennis event at the 1900 Summer Olympics was held in Paris from 6 to 11 July. Sixteen players from three nations entered as eight pairs, including two mixed teams. The competition was won by the British brothers Laurence Doherty and Reginald Doherty.

Background

This was the second appearance of men's doubles tennis at the Summer Olympics. The event has been held at every Games where tennis was on the program: from 1896 to 1924 and then from 1988 onward, with a demonstration event in 1968.

The Doherty brothers of Great Britain were heavily favored; Reginald Doherty had just won his fourth straight Wimbledon singles title, and Laurence Doherty would later win five. Other notable players included Max Decugis, who would win eight French championships after the Games, and Harold Mahony, winner of Wimbledon in 1896 and the European championship in 1899. The United States and France each made their debut in the event, while Great Britain made its second appearance.
