Tennis at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's doubles
Croatian pair wins all-Croatian gold medal match.
Last updated
The men's doubles tennis event at the 2020 Summer Olympics was won by Croatian pair Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić, who defeated compatriots Marin Čilić and Ivan Dodig in the final. It marked the first time since 1908 that the gold medal match was contested by pairs from the same country, and Croatia earned its first Olympic tennis gold and silver medals. New Zealand won its first Olympic tennis medal when Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus took the bronze.
Qualification
Each National Olympic Committee could enter up to two pairs, with a maximum of six male players per nation across singles and doubles. The event had 32 pair places (64 players). Qualification was based primarily on the ranking lists of 7 June 2021. Up to 10 pairs were selected through individual doubles ranking: the top 10 players in the doubles ranking qualified and could bring any partner with a top-300 ranking in either singles or doubles.
The draw was then filled to at least 24 pairs using combined ranking, where the better of each player's singles or doubles ranking was added together, with the lowest combined rankings earning spots. If the quota of 86 total male players in singles and doubles was not reached, combined ranking continued until either the quota was filled or the 32-pair maximum was reached. Once the 86-player quota was met, priority went to pairs with both members playing in singles; if that did not fill 32 pairs, priority went to pairs with one singles player; finally, pairs without any singles players were selected by combined ranking.
