Reader's Guide
Regenerating health in Max Payne 3 works on a simple principle: when you take damage, you must use painkillers to regenerate health. Painkillers are recovery items that restore health when consumed. The game also introduces a 'Last Stand' mechanic, granting players a grace period when health is fully depleted that allows the player to kill the enemy that last wounded them in order to remain alive, so long as the player has at least one recovery item. When this feature is utilized, it does deplete all of the player's remaining 'bullet time'. Painkillers were already the way to restore health in the first Max Payne, where they are scattered around levels or dropped by enemies. You can't just tank damage; you must manage your painkiller supply.
