Third-person shooter
The genre of every Max Payne game.
The third-person shooter is a subgenre of 3D shooter games in which the player character is shown on screen rather than seen through their eyes. Every Max Payne game belongs to it: the series is described as a neo-noir third-person shooter, with the 2001 original and 2003's Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne developed by Remedy Entertainment and Max Payne 3 by Rockstar Studios. Max Payne 2 is built from linear levels spread across three chapters, and The New Zealand Herald's Jon Minifie called it an entertainingly dark third-person shooter with a well-crafted noir storyline.
