Development
Stardock first announced Society in May 2005 and featured it at E3 2005 the following month. At that time, the company had no firm release date but aimed for an alpha by the end of 2005, a lengthy beta similar to World of Warcraft by late 2006, and a release in 2007. Paul Kerchen, previously of Maxis where he worked on Simcity 3000 and Simsville, was announced as the lead developer. The game was also announced as free to play, an uncommon model in 2005. Development proved slow; the team worked through 2005 and early 2006 hoping to show footage at E3 2006 but missed that goal. Progress slowed further as the understaffed team focused on finishing Galactic Civilizations II and its expansion packs. Stardock remained quiet until 2009, when it stated it would refocus on Society after shipping Elemental: War of Magic. Following that game's release in 2010, Stardock announced in February 2011 that Society faced funding issues and that the company was seeking solutions through expanding business units and finding partners.
