Saga (2008 video game)

Collectible online RTS where your kingdom persists and faction wars never really end.

On 4 March 2008, Saga kicked out of its open beta (running since 26 February) into a full launch. Wahoo Studios and Silverlode Interactive built it as a massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game, pitching it as the world's first collectible online RTS. No monthly subscription to babysit — the whole monetization runs on booster and expansion packs, and a free version sits on the official site if you just want to jump in and play.

Plot

The setup: a fantasy world torn by the age-old strife between five competing Gods, each commanding a faction with its own races and abilities. Magic fields Dark Elves. Machines fields Dwarves. Nature fields Elves. War fields Orcs and Ogres. Undead fields, well, Undead. Light fields Giants and Humans. The rivalry grid is strict — every faction is diametrically opposed to exactly two others. Machines turns on Magic and Nature. Nature takes a hard stance against War, which it blames for wrecking the natural world. Light pushes order and justice; Magic sinks its hands into black arts. The net effect is a balanced tension: two archenemies, two neutrals per faction. In the current lineup, Machine and Nature have shelved their disagreements to lock into the Order (Machine, Nature, Light), while the rest rally under the Brotherhood (War, Magic, Undead). Undead is the newest entry in that camp.
