Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (released as Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. in Europe and Australia) is a 2015 role-playing game for the Nintendo 3DS. Developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo, it is the fifth game in the Mario & Luigi series, following Dream Team (2013), and crosses over with the Paper Mario series, which was created by Intelligent Systems.

In the story, Luigi accidentally opens a book that contains a paper-based parallel world, scattering its contents across the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario, Luigi, and the befriended Paper Mario must rescue two versions of Princess Peach—one from each universe—after Bowser teams up with his own paper counterpart. Players control all three characters at once as they navigate the overworld toward Bowser’s Castle, engaging in turn-based battles along the way.

AlphaDream developed the game, with Intelligent Systems overseeing production. The crossover idea came from AlphaDream wanting to add a third controllable character to refresh the series’ gameplay. They felt the two series meshed well because of shared mechanics and the chance to introduce new gameplay options from the Paper Mario universe. The game was announced at E3 2015 and launched as scheduled, releasing internationally in December 2015 and in North America the following month.

Reception was generally positive. Critics praised the inclusion of Paper Mario elements and combat, had mixed opinions on the writing, and criticized the worldbuilding and minigames. Many felt the crossover potential with the Paper Mario series was not fully realized. Paper Jam was the last original Mario & Luigi title from AlphaDream; the company later released two remakes of earlier games before filing for bankruptcy in 2019. Development for the next installment, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, was taken over by Acquire, with several former AlphaDream staff members contributing. Brothership launched on November 7, 2024 for the Nintendo Switch.

Some puzzles require character-specific actions—for instance, Paper Mario can slip thro

Lore & Background

In Paper Jam, Luigi accidentally opens a book containing a paper counterpart world, causing its contents to spread into the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi, with the help of Paper Mario, venture to save both Princess Peach variants from Bowser and his paper counterpart. The player controls the trio simultaneously through an overworld to reach Bowser's Castle, fighting enemies in turn-based combat along the way. The game was developed by AlphaDream while Intelligent Systems oversaw production. The concept of a crossover came from AlphaDream's desire to add a third controllable character to shake up traditional gameplay. They considered the combination to work well due to shared gameplay features and opportunities to use Paper Mario elements for new options. The game was announced at E3 2015 and launched as scheduled.

Reader's Guide

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is significant as the last Mario & Luigi installment made by AlphaDream before the company filed for bankruptcy in 2019. It introduced Paper Mario as a third playable character, using paper-based abilities for puzzles and combat. Reception was generally positive, with praise for the introduction of Paper Mario elements and combat, mixed opinions for its writing, and criticism for worldbuilding and minigames. Critics felt the game failed to use the crossover aspects to their fullest potential. The game was followed by two remakes of previous titles, and later Acquire took over development for the sequel Mario & Luigi: Brothership, released on November 7, 2024 for the Nintendo Switch, with several key AlphaDream staff members brought on to work alongside them.

Plot & the Dual-Capture Premise

The narrative of Paper Jam is built around a double-capture scenario in which both Princess Peach and her paper counterpart are seized by Bowser and Paper Bowser, respectively. This dual threat naturally expands the rescue party beyond the usual two-brother lineup, bringing Paper Mario into the fold as a third active participant. The game still follows the series' familiar storytelling template—Mario and Luigi set out on a quest to save Peach and overcome a villain—but the cross-franchise collaboration adds a layer of complexity to the conflict. Two versions of the princess and two versions of the king create a richer antagonistic dynamic than a single foe could provide. The simultaneous control of three protagonists becomes both the narrative and mechanical spine of the experience, marking a meaningful departure from earlier entries that centered exclusively on the two brothers working in tandem.

Trio Combat & Timed-Input Mechanics

Paper Jam's battle system retains the series' traditional turn-based structure while layering in mechanics tailored to its three-character party. The core loop still draws on the timed-input approach seen across the franchise, where attacks gain power when the player presses buttons in sync with on-screen animation sequences, including Mario and Luigi's iconic jumps and hammer swings. The defining addition here is the trio-combo system, which rewards the player for orchestrating all three characters in coordinated strikes. On top of that, battle-cards function as a limited resource that grants temporary combat boosts, introducing a strategic layer of resource management. The series' signature real-time dodge mechanic—inputting commands during an enemy's attack to either slip past it entirely or turn it into a counter-strike—remains a hallmark feature, giving the otherwise methodical turn-based flow a reactive, fast-paced pulse.

Overworld Exploration & Minigame Puzzles

Outside of battle, Paper Jam's overworld emphasizes cooperative navigation through its three-character control scheme. The player guides Mario forward while Luigi trails closely behind, with Paper Mario rounding out the trio. Individual actions are still mapped to the A button for Mario and the B button for Luigi, preserving the control language established since the series' 2003 debut even as a third character enters the equation. A distinguishing design choice in this title is the embedding of minigame-style puzzles directly into the exploration loop, breaking the overworld into self-contained challenges that demand the trio to act in concert. These puzzles build on the special moves that have always required Mario and Luigi to coordinate, now broadened to incorporate Paper Mario's unique toolkit. The collectible-hunting and puzzle-solving framework stays true to the broader RPG structure of the series, yet the minigame format lends exploration a more varied and playful cadence than earlier installments.

Series Lineage & Critical Standing

Shipped in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS, Paper Jam occupies a clear position within a role-playing spin-off lineage that launched in 2003 on the Game Boy Advance. Developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo, it continues a tradition of iterative formula-building in which each entry introduces a fresh twist on the core mechanics. The broader series has cultivated a strong critical reputation: both Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story earned universal-acclaim ratings on Metacritic and are frequently cited among the finest titles on their respective handheld platforms. Paper Jam inherits that goodwill and leverages the 3DS hardware's dual-screen setup, a capability the series has exploited since Partners in Time in 2005. Its cross-franchise partnership with the Paper Mario line represents a logical evolution for a series that has always prioritized character-driven, cooperative play over conventional RPG conventions, reinforcing its identity as a distinctive branch of the wider Mario universe.
