Ulva lactuca, known commonly as sea lettuce or broadleaf sea lettuce, is a green alga that people can eat. It belongs to the family Ulvaceae and serves as the type species for the genus *Ulva*. Another name for it is *U. fenestrata*, which points to its sometimes hole-riddled look.
This alga is thin, flat, and green, with a ruffled, often torn edge. It grows from a small disc-shaped holdfast attached to rocks or other algae, without a stipe. The membrane is two cells thick, soft, and see-through. It can reach up to 18 centimeters long, though usually less, and up to 30 centimeters across. Its color ranges from green to dark green. Under a microscope, the two cell layers are arranged unevenly. The chloroplast is either cup-shaped or a flat plate, with one to three pyrenoids. Other *Ulva* species look similar and can be hard to tell apart.
The life cycle has two similar-looking stages: the sporangial and gametangial thalli. A diploid adult plant makes zoospores through meiosis, which are haploid. These settle and grow into haploid male and female plants that look like the diploid ones. When these haploid plants release gametes, they join to form a zygote, which then sprouts and grows into a new diploid plant.
Ulva lactuca appears worldwide: Europe, both coasts of North America, Central America, Caribbean Islands, South America, Africa, Indian Ocean Islands, Southwest Asia, China, Pacific Islands, Australia, and New Zealand.

In the Pacific Northwest, it ranges from Alaska to the Gulf of California. It grows especially well where nutrients are plentiful. Off Brittany, France, high nitrate levels from intensive farming wash into the sea, causing huge amounts of *U. lactuca* to wash up on beaches. As it rots, it releases methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other gases. In August 2009, unprecedented amounts piled up on Brittany beaches, sparking a public health scare. The decaying thalli gave off large amounts of hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that blocks cytochrome c oxidase, stopping cellular respiration and causing critical hypoxia. Near Saint-Michel-en-Grève, a horse rider passed out and his horse died after breathing the fumes.
