The genus Umbraulva was first described by Bae and Lee in 2001 after studying the morphology and DNA sequences of Ulva japonica, Ulva amamiensis, and Ulva olivascens. These three species were placed into the new genus as Umbraulva japonica, Umbraulva amamiensis, and Umbraulva olivascens. The genus was proposed based on olive-green thalli, deep-water subtidal habitat, presence of siphonaxanthin, and divergence of ITS and SSU rDNA sequences from other Ulva species. In 2016, Spalding et al. described two new species, Umbraulva kaloakulau and Umbraulva kuaweuweu. However, in 2020, Kawai et al. found differences in morphology, life history, carotenoids, and chloroplast genes between Umbraulva kuaweuweu and other Umbraulva species, and proposed the new genus Ryuguphycus, transferring Umbraulva kuaweuweu into it. In 2021, Lee et al. described a new specimen as Umbraulva yunseulla. Currently, Umbraulva contains five known species.

Umbraulva species are widely distributed, identified in Asia, Europe, Hawaii, and New Zealand, including Korea, Japan, China, France, Spain, Ireland, southern Britain, and the Mediterranean. They inhabit deep subtidal waters from 3 m to 125 m, growing on rocks, shells, coralline algae, rhodoliths, and reefs. Morphologically, Umbraulva species are macroscopic with olive-green to dark green blades that are flattened and ellipsoid, or narrow and oval, often with perforations and lobes. The holdfast is usually discoid, except in Umbraulva kaloakulau where it is very small. Blades range from 4 cm to 115 cm in height, 5 cm to 50 cm in width, and 40 μm to 400 μm in thickness. Margins may be ruffled or curled, and can have microscopic protrusions. Cells are cuboidal, rounded rectangles, or polygonal from surface view; in cross section the thallus is diastromic with two cell layers. Chloroplasts contain siphonaxanthin and 1 to 4 pyrenoids per cell.

Umbraulva is closely related to Ulva, and early developmental stages are very similar. Differentiating traits include larger, rounded cells in mature plants, sterile cells in margins that detach during reproduction, and DNA sequence divergence of 3.0% to 3.3% in ITS and SSU rDNA from Ulva and Enteromorpha. The life cycle is sporic and isomorphic, as described for U. japonica, with diploid sporophytes and haploid gametophytes that are morphologically identical.
