Dictyosphaeria versluysii is a green alga belonging to the class Ulvophyceae and the family Siphonocladaceae. Its green to bluish color comes from high chlorophyll levels used for photosynthesis. The alga forms solid, rounded cushions or mats up to 5 cm across, made of bubble-like polygonal segments that are no more than 2 mm in diameter. These segments grow in three directions, creating a dense, pseudoparenchymatous clump. The outer walls of adjacent segments are linked by branching hapteroid cells up to 270 μm long. Inside the segments, narrow spines and trabeculae—simple or forked structures 50–150 μm long—line the surfaces.

This species is native to Indonesia and has a wide distribution across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including Mexico, China, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, Hawaii, the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, West and South Africa, Ascension Island, Indian Ocean Islands, Japan, Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, and both North and West Australia. It lives in intertidal zones down to depths of 76 meters, typically anchored to rocks or coral rubble in calm, shallow reef flats and tidepools. Unlike weedy species, it forms compact clusters of bubbles evenly spaced among turf on firm substrates and is not invasive.

Compared to the similar *Dictyosphaeria cavernosa*, which is hollow, green, and often forms large, cup-shaped stands considered a nuisance weed on reef flats, *D. versluysii* is grayish-green, solid, firmly attached to rocks, and less common, usually growing into small cushions.
