Codium spongiosum
A light-green, spongy seaweed of warmer and tropical waters.
Codium spongiosum is a species of green seaweed belonging to the family Codiaceae. Its light-green body, or thallus, grows in a flattened to cushion-like shape, typically measuring 10 to 25 centimeters across and about 20 millimeters thick. The thallus has irregular lobes and is moderately firm when alive, but becomes noticeably spongy after death. The plant’s utricles—small, bladder-like structures—grow in large clusters, each 2 to 6 millimeters long and covered with many hairs.
This species closely resembles *Codium lucasii*, but differs in that *C. lucasii* attaches more tightly to rock surfaces. *C. spongiosum* grows on rocks (epilithic) in both the subtidal and intertidal zones, usually in calmer waters from the low tide mark down to several meters deep. It is common in warmer waters, though it also appears in scattered locations in colder waters.
The species was first formally described in 1855 by botanist William Henry Harvey in *Some Accounts of the Marine Botany of the Colony of Western Australia*, published in the *Transactions of the Royal Irish Academy*. The type specimen was collected from King George Sound on the south coast of Western Australia. In Western Australia, it occurs along the coast from the Kimberley region south to the Recherche Archipelago. It is also found along the South Australian coasts, including the Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, and Fleurieu Peninsula. Overall, it is common in all tropical and subtropical waters.
