Cladophora is a genus of branching filamentous green algae in the class Ulvophyceae, with a worldwide distribution mainly in marine or brackish waters, though a few species occur in freshwater. Cladophora forms thalli of branched, uniseriate filaments that may be attached via rhizoids or a disc-like holdfast, or unattached. Cells are large, multinucleate, with parietal chloroplasts forming a net-like reticulum; the alga is bright grass-green due to chlorophyll a and b, β-carotene, and xanthophylls. Thick-walled akinetes develop under unfavorable conditions such as short photoperiods, low temperatures, or nutrient unavailability. The filaments can form dense mats that affect light penetration and oxygen levels, and may serve as habitat and food for aquatic organisms.

Cladophora reproduces both asexually (via biflagellate zoospores from mitotic division) and sexually (fusion of male and female gametes in water, forming a diploid zygote that develops into a short-lived sporophyte). The life cycle alternates between a haploid gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte, which look highly similar; the only visible difference is that gametes have two flagella and spores have four. Unlike Spirogyra, Cladophora branches and does not undergo conjugation.

Cladophora exists in tropical and moderate climates, in freshwater, wastewater, and marine ecosystems, including lakes, ponds, rivers, and coastal littoral zones. It requires nitrates, orthophosphates, hard water with pH 7–10, high light intensity, and nutrient-rich conditions. In Devon, England, large numbers of Cladophora balls averaging 2.5 cm in diameter were thrown ashore, forming a layer of several million balls.

Cladophora is significant for its dual roles as both a beneficial and nuisance organism. Modest growth provides food for fish and aquatic animals, buffers nutrient sequestration, and protects organisms from ultraviolet radiation. However, under conditions of increased phosphorus loading, it can form extensive floating mats that block light, reduce oxygen in deeper water, and interfere with fishing by clogging nets. The mats also reduce shoreline property values when they wash ashore and rot. The genus is cosmopolitan, so infestations are not typically considered invasive. Its ecological relationships with quagga mussel populations are noted as complex and unclear.

Cladophora has practical uses: it is harvested as food, notably in Laos where it is called 'Mekong weed' and eaten dried in sheets similar to nori, raw, in soups, or in steamed curries. It is also used in phytoremediation, with species like Cladophora fascicularis filtering heavy metals and pollutants and absorbing nitrogen and phosphorus. Trans-esterification of Cladophora oils can produce biodiesel, though production depends on oil content. Pharmacologically, Cladophora is purported to have medicinal uses. Its seasonal blooming from early spring to summer indicates eutrophic conditions and possible pollution.
