Chaetomorpha
A genus of unbranched green algae, also known as sea emerald.
Chaetomorpha, commonly called sea emerald, is a genus of green algae belonging to the family Cladophoraceae. Its filaments are macroscopic, uniseriate (only one cell thick), and completely unbranched—a key trait that sets it apart from its closest relatives, the branching algae in the genus Cladophora. The cells are cylindrical or barrel-shaped, multinucleate, and have thick walls. Inside each cell, the chloroplast is parietal and net-like, containing many pyrenoids.
Reproduction can happen asexually through biflagellate or quadriflagellate zoospores, or simply when filaments break apart. Sexual reproduction is isogamous, involving biflagellate gametes.
This genus is probably found worldwide, mostly in marine or brackish waters, and very rarely in freshwater. A few freshwater species have been described, but their classification within Chaetomorpha is uncertain.
About 50 species are recognized. These algae are popular among aquarium hobbyists, but dumping them into waterways can introduce nonnative populations that become invasive and harm ecosystems. To prevent accidental releases, biologists recommend boiling, microwaving, freezing, or drying out aquarium Chaetomorpha before disposal.
