Equidae—the horse family—includes horses, asses, zebras, and numerous extinct species known only from fossils. Its evolutionary history began over 50 million years ago during the Eocene epoch, when small, multi-toed ungulates gradually gave rise to larger, single-toed forms. All living members belong to the genus *Equus*, which first appeared in North America. This family is part of the order Perissodactyla, which also contains living tapirs and rhinoceroses, along with several extinct families. Within the superfamily Equoidea, Equidae is the only surviving family; the other, Palaeotheriidae, is entirely extinct. Any member of Equidae—whether horse, zebra, or ass—is called an equid.
The oldest known equid fossils, found in North America, date from about 54 million years ago in the early Eocene. These early forms, once grouped under *Hyracotherium* but now placed in separate genera, were about the size of a fox. They had three toes on each hind foot and four on each front foot, were already adapted for running, and browsed on soft plants. Their brain structure indicates they were alert and intelligent. Over millions of years, later species reduced their toe count and developed teeth better suited for grinding tough grasses. As hindgut fermenters, equids digest fibrous plant material through a strategy that requires them to be relatively large mammals, a size they had achieved by the time this digestive system evolved. The family became especially diverse during the Miocene epoch, producing many species with the modern horse-like body shape. Most of these bore their weight on the central third toe, with the other toes reduced or barely touching the ground. The sole surviving genus, *Equus*, emerged by the early Pleistocene and spread rapidly worldwide.
