Camels are even-toed ungulates belonging to the genus *Camelus*, most readily identified by the distinctive fatty deposits, known as humps, on their backs. These animals have a long history of domestication and serve humans in multiple capacities: as livestock, they provide milk and meat for food, as well as fiber and felt from their hair for textiles. As working animals, they are exceptionally well-suited to arid desert environments and are a crucial means of transporting both passengers and cargo. Three species of camel exist today. The single-humped dromedary accounts for approximately 94% of the global camel population, while the two-humped Bactrian camel makes up the remaining 6%. A third species, the wild Bactrian camel, is distinct from its domestic counterpart and is not its ancestor; this species is now endangered, with a population of around 1,000 individuals that continues to decline.

The term "camel" is sometimes used informally to refer to all members of the family Camelidae, which includes seven species. The direct ancestor of modern camels, *Paracamelus*, migrated across the Bering land bridge into Asia approximately six million years ago, during the late Miocene.

A full-grown adult dromedary stands at a certain height at the shoulder and hump, with Bactrian camels capable of being a foot taller. They can run at high speeds in short bursts and maintain sustained speeds. Their hoofs feature widening toes that provide extra grip on varied sandy sediments. Male dromedaries possess a unique inflatable throat organ called a dulla, which they extrude from the mouth during mating season to assert dominance and attract females. Camels are the only ungulates that mate while sitting on the ground. Their average life expectancy ranges from 40 to 50 years.
