War Rig

A fortress on wheels carrying the last hope of a dying world.

The War Rig is the armoured supply tanker of Immortan Joe's Citadel in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). In Fury Road, Joe sends his lieutenant Imperator Furiosa in the War Rig to trade produce and water for petrol and ammunition, and she uses it to carry his five wives away from the Citadel.

Lore & Background

On the journey Furiosa drives into a dust-choked supercell, and an engine kill switch stops Max from stealing the Rig. At the end of Fury Road, Nux sacrifices himself by wrecking the Rig to block the canyon behind the group, killing Rictus. In Furiosa, Furiosa helps build the War Rig, a heavily armed supply tanker that can withstand raider attacks; Praetorian Jack commands the Citadel's first War Rig, and Joe later promotes Furiosa to Imperator and gives her command of a new one.

Reader's Guide

For the film, the War Rig was made by combining a Tatra 815 and a Chevrolet Fleetmaster and fusing a Volkswagen Beetle to the hull. Sound designer Mark Mangini saw it as an allegory for Moby-Dick, with Immortan Joe as Captain Ahab, and layered its truck sounds with whale calls; its final destruction used slowed-down bear growls.
