The story follows Ann Darrow, an unemployed actress, who is hired by film director Carl Denham (also called C.B.) for a new movie. They board the ship Venture, where Ann meets a young sailor named Rick and his monkey Chips, and later Jack Driscoll, who saves her from falling cargo. On Skull Island, natives sacrifice Ann to the giant gorilla King Kong, who carries her into the jungle. There, they battle a Tyrannosaurus, a Pterodactylus, and a Gigantophis. Jack rescues Ann, and Kong is knocked out by a gas bomb.
Later, Kong escapes from C.B.'s theater and rampages through New York City. He takes Ann to the top of the Empire State Building, with Jack in pursuit. Biplanes attack Kong but mostly miss. After all planes are downed, the army sends two blimps with a net between them, successfully catching Kong. As he struggles to escape, the net tears, and when he reaches for Ann, he falls and plummets to the streets. Kong survives the fall. Afterward, he is shown being taken away by authorities, though his ultimate fate is left ambiguous.
